PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor: This site uses PHP for server-side scripting. It's power, speed and features make it ideally suited for managing a site of this size - without PHP I don't know how I'd do it.
Apache Software Foundation: This site is served by the Apache HTTP Server - which is the number one server on the internet for a very good reason.
Smarty: Template Engine: This site uses Smarty to separate its code from its markup and to cache dynamically-generated pages.

Sane CSS Typography: This site uses Owen Briggs' technique for creating relative font sizes with CSS that manage to stay fairly consistent across browsers and platforms and still scale in size.
Hybrid CSS Dropdowns: The primary navigation of this site is an example of Eric Shepherd's technique published at A List Apart.
How to Succeed With URLs: Another article at ALA by Till Quack gave me the initial idea and starting point for contemptible.org's own index page which handles all inbound requests, parses the URL string and automagically displays the correct page.

Dive Into Accessibility: This site really made me realize how important accessible markup and design are. A very enlightening read.
CSS Zen Garden: The CSS Zen Garden has served as a tremendous source of inspiration.
