Sleep Runner
Drifting lazily
Images of the past come to haunt
Sleep flees
Quickly then, I cry for me
I am weak
I grasp for anything to help me reach
that state of unconciousness
Once it was liquor, then it was pills
Now the run takes me away
Total exhaustion slips over each muscle and nerve
But my mind whirls when my eyes close
I scream and the shaking comes
I run and run through darkened, twisting streets
'Till it goes away and panic leaves me
For a little while
Then I can laugh, I can play and function
Then the night descends
Ignoring the heaviness
Flip on the switches, there's light
One by one, a ritual by now
And I lay down, closing my eyes
I hear them, see, then it starts again
I get up and I run
